This book deals mainly with economic growth, its interdependence with social capital, and the consequences of the “happy productive worker” hypothesis. A happy employee works better, earns more money, and as a result, his quality of life goes up. This feedback loop of productivity and happiness means that on the road to effective economic growth and development, man and his quality of life must be taken into consideration as a very important causative factor. The authors guess that the social capital (trust, helpfulness, fairness), family social capital (marriage, divorce, fertility), as well as income inequality are social determinants of the quality of life, sustainable growth and development. They all are characteristics of society’s harmonization. Most of these hypotheses have been verified using econometric models. We hope that such an approach will help to reduce the danger of the fetishization of economic growth. Likewise, the hypothesis on non-cyclical GDP fluctuations was considered, where efficiency of fixed capital investment depends on post bottlenecks. The book summarizes Jon Jacek Sztaudynger’s scientific work on economic growth over the last twenty years. It contains six published articles (co-authors: Ewa Ambroziak, Paweł Baranowski, Paweł Starosta, and Jan Marek Sztaudynger).

GVCs have become an inherent component of the economic landscape of East Asia, one of the key pillars of the regional integration processes and division of labour based on fragmentation and specialisation. The main objective of the paper was to describe the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on GVCs in East Asia from the perspective of Japan, using monthly trade statistics for 2020-2021. The paper indicates the short-term disruptive impact on trade statistics with the prospect of improvement, however, under conditions of the gradual phasing out of the pandemic, the effective utilisation of RCEP concessions to boost GVC trade, and with the better coordination of the regional response to future health crises. Statistical analysis is accompanied by critical analysis of literature in the field of research. The paper delivers the current statistical picture of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on intra-RCEP trade, accompanied by references to legal and institutional aspects of the response of individual countries to health crisis.

Toward the „new normal” after Covid-19 – a post-transition economy perspective contains a collection of 21 papers addressing the societal, political, economic, and managerial challenges of the post-pandemic world. The book is divided into three parts. Part one touches on the supranational and national level aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Part two focuses on business sectors and industries, whereas part three provides the perspective of companies. Authors – researchers from the Poznań University of Economics and Business, Institute of International Business and Economics – share their research results, voice concerns, and offer recommendations on creating today’s world more immune to shocks and ready for unknowns. The pandemic of Covid-19 revealed many weaknesses of the global economy, national economies and states, business sectors, and individual companies. It’s undoubtedly the turning point, but simultaneously it’s an opportunity and a spur to change toward the new and sustainable normal.

The goal of this monograph is to assess the course of convergence processes occurring in European housing markets and to identify the effects of this convergence. The publication is part of research on the housing sector carried out in many countries. However, it presents not only the most frequently conducted studies on price convergence but is also characterised by a broader perspective, taking into account real and institutional convergence of housing markets. An attempt has been also made to indicate the reasons for this phenomenon and its effects. It is addressed to a wide audience: people researching the theory of economic growth, individuals professionally interested in the issues related to the functioning of real estate markets, and especially to students of programmes that have included real estate issues in their curricula.

The main aim of the paper is to determine the similarities and differences in the convergence and synchronization of business cycles in the EU and EMU in 1995-2018. The secondary goals are the following: a) the identification of the core and peripheries of European business cycles; b) the effects of monetary integration and the level of economic development and scale of the economy on the convergence and synchronization of business cycles. The results from the descriptive statistics and the correlation and regression analyses are: 1) classical cycles have a relatively high and similar concordance with the EU and the EMU, while at the same time they are strongly divergent on recession; 2) synchronization of the growth cycles is more diversified than classical cycles; 3) there is a clear division between the core and peripheries of European business cycles; 4) convergence of cycles is much more diversified than their synchronization; 5) level of economic development and the scale of the economy have an important influence on the convergence and synchronization of business cycles.

Internationalisation is an important process currently observed in the contemporary global economy. It consists in creating and developing diverse forms of cross-border ties between enterprises and foreign direct investment is an example of these. Multinational enterprises are looking for optimal locations in almost all (politically and economically safe) countries and regions across the globe. Most governments actively compete for investors by offering different incentive schemes, such as, inter alia, fiscal, financial, regulatory, and technical and information instruments and measures. The primary research goal of the study is to assess the importance of incentives offered to foreign direct investors by the evaluation of their effects understood in this case as investor reaction to such incentives. Hence, the process is seen from the investor perspective. The first part of the monograph is devoted to theoretical aspects of assisting foreign investors. The second part, which is empirical, discusses studies conducted to assess the relevance of incentives from the point of view of the host country economy. The publication is addressed mainly to economists and representatives of international business. It may also be of interest to people engaged in business operations in international contexts: managers, experts, representatives of public administration. The monograph should also be recommended as an excellent supplementary reading for students of all university courses connected with the internationalisation of enterprises. '

In this volume of the journal “Economics of the 21st Century” we present six scientific papers, which take under consideration macroeconomic problems observed in the global economy. In the first three articles researchers concentrate on economic matters analysed from the perspective of the European Union. In a paper devoted to the competitiveness of Central and Eastern Europe M. Myszkowska studies the ten economies forming this region, trying to determine – through the prism of an adequate set of competitiveness’ factors – what decides about productivity and prosperity in these countries. In his article G. Shkabarin conducts an analysis of foreign direct investments’ spillovers in transitive economies on the example of the Baltic countries. He examines the effects for the productivity at various levels and attempts to determine the existence, sign and magnitude of different types of spillovers. In turn, A. Skórska searches for an answer to the question what the scale, dynamism and disparities of employment and underemployment in the European Union are. She also speculates what the chances are to achieve employment objectives in the context of strategy “Europe 2020”. The focus of J. Kundera is the economic crisis in Greece. The author attempts to identify its causes and deliberates what changes Greece must implement in its economic policy and what institutional reforms should be carried out in the European Union to overcome the present crisis and prevent their occurrence in the future. The presented volume is concluded with two scientific texts, the authors of which analyse chosen macroeconomic issues on the example of Poland. The article of A. Ablov examines the firm-level and regional determinants of inward foreign direct investments into Polish enterprises in the framework of sectoral analysis. He aims to find out which of these determinants influence investments attraction more and how their effects vary depending on the segment of the economy. In turn, A. Kuźmińska--Haberla and M. Haberla investigate the most vital challenges of medical tourism. Their article presents major determinants of development of such a phenomenon in Poland, the most important benefits offered by rapid growth of this field of economy and concerns about medical tourists. The papers included in this very publication bring new insights into selected macroeconomic problems in the modern global economy. We hope that a Reader interested in these subjects will find here the incentives for further research and scientific inquiry. Bogusława Drelich-Skulska, Wawrzyniec Michalczyk

Asia-Pacific region continues to be an essential element of the global economy. Delivering another volume of Research Papers devoted to that region we have no doubts that Asia and Pacific economic importance will only continue to grow. But the world is changing, and so will change the way in which Asian and Pacific economies will – hopefully – grow and prosper. How the region of huge economic dynamism, but also of diverse economic characteristics, will meet the challenges of the 21st century? Redefinition of the role of Asia-Pacific region in the global economy is a process that is already underway. It has many shades and can be analysed from different perspectives. In their broadest definition, economic sciences, which include economics and management, study the behaviour of market participants. As it is this behaviour that ultimately creates economic results, it makes eminent scientific sense to understand it. Yet despite multiple studies in this field we cannot predict all economic phenomena, which is evidenced by recurrent crises (affecting both the overall economy and individual firms). It appears that human behaviour in an economic context has, as of yet, been insufficiently researched. Economic choices are accompanied by mental states which are increasingly often addressed by economic theory. Our poor ability to predict economic phenomena might stem from the fact that human mental states have not been adequately described. In the existing body of theory, human economic behaviour is viewed as automatic, with linear relationships between stimulus and reaction, while in fact human responses are underpinned by subjective interpretations (judgements). The distinguishing trait of humans is that we judge our environment, including the organizations we are part of, their results, and the activities occurring within them. It has been generally recognized that categories based on the concepts of efficiency and effectiveness are the principal criteria of evaluation (judgement) in economic sciences. The interpretation of effectiveness and efficiency is often subjective, as it is made in the context of the utility of various theoretical concepts, of diverse ways of perceiving a firm’s goals. The problems indicated above are not new to economic sciences. A subjective approach was the distinctive feature of the so-called ‘psychological’ (Austrian) school of economics. The interpretation of the concepts of effectiveness and efficiency has a long tradition too. It may be reasonable to approach the problem of the economic evaluation of a firm (including effectiveness and efficiency assessment) from a slightly different perspective.
