“This book is not addressed to the learned, or to those who regard a practical problem merely as something to be talked about,” with this sentence English philosopher Bertrand Russell began The Conquest of Happiness and it has become an inspiration for me and a starting point for my analysis. Staying true to Russell's ideas, I have written a book which—I believe—can be addressed to all (scholars as well) who are interested in happiness and how it can be achieved. I have placed my considerations on happiness in the areas we all know: family, marriage, children and gender. When writing the book I surfed through Internet forums and analysed the results of scientific studies in order to scrutinise Russell's seven causes of unhappiness: competition (when investing in children), boredom (of doing housework), fatigue (of double shift), envy and comparisons of mothers, males’ sense of sin, persecution mania and new fathers’ fears of public opinion. Let's be honest: my findings are not always nice. Not infrequently, the results of scientists' work contradict what we believe. Read it only if you are ready to face new and unexpected.

This issue of Sociological Review commemorates the 25th anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of The Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. It should be recalled that the beginnings of children’s studies and the sociology of childhood coincided in time with the introduction of this treaty, which established international standards for children’s protection and development. The Convention aims at safeguarding the youngest society members from different forms of abuse, exploitation and violence, as well as at promoting their rights to a decent standard of living and to broad social participation. The authors of the articles presented herein, representing the current sociological attitude towards children and youth, follow these assumptions. The articles thus mirror some important attributes of contemporary children’s studies – its cognitive multidimensionality, differentiated quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the shift from “research on children” to “research with children”, scholars’ interest in the results of comparative studies (especially the results of natural sciences), and the concern about the practical implementation of research outcomes. The main topics tackled in this collection of texts are children’s poverty and social inequalities rooted in the first phase of their life cycle, suffering and various risks experienced by children and teenagers, framed in both the national and international contexts, as well as children’s quality of life, youngsters’ well-being, youth participation, civic engagement and the new concept of investing in children. Children, considered as equal social actors and citizens – although still most vulnerable to abuse, discrimination and social exclusion – are presented in the framework of their complicated networks of relationships with peers, adults, collectivities and societies, the welfare state, social policy institutions and other organizations, with the notion to important factors decisive for their present life and their future.

W literaturze naukowej studia miejskie z różnymi obszarami badań stają się coraz bardziej dynamicznie rozwijającą się subdyscypliną. Miasta, zwłaszcza globalne, stają się głównymi miejscami inicjowania rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego. Tom otwiera esej o perspektywach integracji i polityce europejskiej tak istotnie oddziałującej na procesy zachodzące w środowiskach miejskich. Kolejny artykuł koncentruje uwagę na problematyce miast partnerskich w kontekście formowania się relacji przyjaźni i współpracy w polityce europejskiej. Artykuł następny dotyczy wzorów i struktury zaufania w poprzemysłowych miastach Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej. Dwa kolejne teksty prezentują wyniki badań socjologów nad problematyką jakości życia zarówno w ujęciu teoretycznym jak i empirycznym. W pierwszym z nich prowadzone są analizy przydatności pomiarów tego zjawiska, a w drugim prezentowane są wyniki badań w odniesieniu do poprzemysłowych miast Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej. W kolejnych artykułach podejmowane są zagadnienia relacji pomiędzy miastem postrzeganym w kategoriach kulturowo-społecznych, a miastem jako pewną formą przedsiębiorczości oraz próby analiz przestrzeni miejskiej w perspektywie „teorii scen”.
