Książka ma charakter teoretyczno-empiryczny i trzy główne cele. Pierwszy z nich to wyjaśnienie i systematyzacja pojęć związanych z zaufaniem w relacjach business-to-business (B2B). Oryginalny wkład monografii do badań nad zaufaniem można szczególnie odnieść do pogłębionego rozpoznania zmienności zaufania w czasie w relacjach B2B, zwłaszcza w kontekście relacji budowanych wokół projektów, jako obszaru zarządzania.

The book contains a series of eight long case studies on various business issues in emerging markets (for instance Polish, Chinese, Nigerian). The authors focus on a variety of topics from marketing, through business operations, finance, leadership, innovation, business development, internationalization and decisions to human resources management. Also, the perspective of the analyzed issues is varied, in the initial case studies, the microeconomic approach dominates, then the mezoeconomic and macroeconomic approach. The team of authors included both academics, with extensive teaching experience in English-speaking studies, and business practitioners whose practical knowledge allows them to explore contemporary business challenges in emerging markets. We are putting this book in the hands of lecturers and students of economics, finance, and management, believing that it will be a source of inspiration, discussion and will allow to better explore contemporary business. At the same time, we hope that by offering this book, we are filling a gap in the publication market, which has been dominated by case studies dedicated to well-known companies, well-known brands, and mature markets.

The subject the articles in this issue of Research Papers (RP) are focused on concerns the measurability of social impact. The inspiration for such an approach to issues in the area of social responsibility was Directive 2014/95 /EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 October 2014 amending Directive 2013/34/EU regarding the disclosure of non-financial and diversity information by certain large undertakings and groups. The result of the implementation of this directive is to oblige large individuals and groups operating in the EU to demonstrate their social and environmental involvement, as well as to increase the possibility of comparing information transmitted in various studies by emphasizing the transparency of disclosed information and continuity and regularity in their publication.

Internationalisation is an important process currently observed in the contemporary global economy. It consists in creating and developing diverse forms of cross-border ties between enterprises and foreign direct investment is an example of these. Multinational enterprises are looking for optimal locations in almost all (politically and economically safe) countries and regions across the globe. Most governments actively compete for investors by offering different incentive schemes, such as, inter alia, fiscal, financial, regulatory, and technical and information instruments and measures. The primary research goal of the study is to assess the importance of incentives offered to foreign direct investors by the evaluation of their effects understood in this case as investor reaction to such incentives. Hence, the process is seen from the investor perspective. The first part of the monograph is devoted to theoretical aspects of assisting foreign investors. The second part, which is empirical, discusses studies conducted to assess the relevance of incentives from the point of view of the host country economy. The publication is addressed mainly to economists and representatives of international business. It may also be of interest to people engaged in business operations in international contexts: managers, experts, representatives of public administration. The monograph should also be recommended as an excellent supplementary reading for students of all university courses connected with the internationalisation of enterprises.

This volume of Business Informatics contains extended versions of selected papers accepted at the 10th Conference on Advanced Information Technologies for Management AITM’2012. This is also the twelfth volume in the series of monographs entitled “Advanced Information Technologies for Management”. The series was initiated in 2001, and each year a new volume is published. The purpose of this initiative has been the successive publication of research results in the area of business information systems. To effectively support long-term management processes, information systems must relate to current models of conducting business initiatives and their development directions as well as supporting the latest information technologies. Such solutions are expected from users and other stakeholders. The first volume contained only articles written by researchers and Ph.D. students of the Department of Informatics at Wrocław University of Economics, Poland. In the years 2002–2006, the publication was given national character by linking it with National Scientific Conferences under the same title as the monograph series. Since 2007 all papers have been published only in English to disseminate this series in foreign countries. As a result, the scope of the monograph has been extended and the publication has gained a kind of “added value”. This year the volume of Business Informatics continued the convention of providing researchers as well as practitioners with an opportunity to present new results of Information Technology in business and management and discuss current developments and applications. The papers present various points of view, perspectives and research results derived from diverse concepts and scientific foundations. The list of authors includes a large number of scientists from Polish universities, consulting and integration firms. As each year, a large number of papers were submitted by Polish authors representing the leading research centers and universities, namely the Academy of Management in Łódź, Gdańsk University of Technology, Katowice University of Economics, Military University of Technology in Warsaw, Polish-Japanese Institute of Information Technology, Poznań University of Economics, Warsaw School of Economics and Wrocław University of Economics. This year’s volume also contains articles written by researchers from Canada (Concordia University, Montreal), Germany (Deutsche Welle and Siemens AG, Corporate Technology), Greece (National Technical University of Athens), Israel (IBM R&D Labs), Italy (RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana), Norway (Telenor R&I), Sweden (Uppsala University) and the United Kingdom (University of Exeter and STFC Futures Program). The publication of this volume, as we have already written, has been linked with the organization of the 10th Conference on Advanced Information Technologies for Management AITM’2012 (Wrocław, September 9–10, 2012), thus allowing for yet another presentation of ideas, concepts and IT applications to a wider audience. AITM’2012 was one of the important events of the Federated Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems FedCSIS’2012, which was attended by over 290 participants from all over the world. We want to address special thanks to the FedCSIS’2012 organizers – Leszek Maciaszek, Marcin Paprzycki and Maria Ganzha – without their hard work and continuous support, it would not have been possible to have such a great conference.

The main aim of the paper is to determine the similarities and differences in the convergence and synchronization of business cycles in the EU and EMU in 1995-2018. The secondary goals are the following: a) the identification of the core and peripheries of European business cycles; b) the effects of monetary integration and the level of economic development and scale of the economy on the convergence and synchronization of business cycles. The results from the descriptive statistics and the correlation and regression analyses are: 1) classical cycles have a relatively high and similar concordance with the EU and the EMU, while at the same time they are strongly divergent on recession; 2) synchronization of the growth cycles is more diversified than classical cycles; 3) there is a clear division between the core and peripheries of European business cycles; 4) convergence of cycles is much more diversified than their synchronization; 5) level of economic development and the scale of the economy have an important influence on the convergence and synchronization of business cycles.

Innovation and sustainable development have become buzzwords in the 21st century with the idea of creative destruction launched by Joseph Alois Schumpeter being the base for evolutionary economics. However, new institutional economics helps to understand the necessity of support provided to entrepreneurs and innovators by science and administration to reduce the risk of launching the said innovations. This e-book is devoted to selected types of innovation. Every type of innovation is described with the use of theoretical background and is enriched by adequate case study. Traditional division into four types of innovation, proposed by J.A. Schumpeter (1934), containing product, process, organizational and marketing innovations, was widely accepted, including European Union institutions (OECD/Eurostat, 2008). The concept of innovation has long been dominated by a technical approach to the innovation process, despite the economic arguments exposed by one of the precursors of the theory of innovation and, at the same time, the school of evolutionary economics—Joseph Alois Schumpeter. Frequently, in the context of innovation, it is indicated that organizational and marketing aspects play a part in the successful introduction of innovation onto the market. The structure of the book is based on the typology proposed by Keeley, Walters, Pikkel and Quinn (2013), which focuses on the economic character of innovations. Ten types of innovation are directly related to Schumpeter’s and Oslo Manual classification. A new set of innovations emphasize the economic side of innovation process. The technical novelties are to support new configuration, offering or customers’ experience. This new approach is based on presumptions coming from design thinking idea, leading to user—driven innovation and on cooperation with institutions and entities supporting innovation process. The chapters are devoted to every type of innovation, grouped into three major parts: innovations based on configuration, offering and experience. In the book, configuration includes types of innovations focused on innermost workings of an enterprise and its business system. Offering part contains the types of innovations, that are focused on an enterprise’s core product (good or service), or a collection of its products. The last part, dedicated to innovations based on experience, is focused on more customer-facing elements of an enterprise and its business system.

The concept of this monograph is focused on an analysis of the prospects for improving the competitive position of Asian countries in the global economy. The authors argue that a comprehensive analysis of Asia’s economic development requires studying its business and financial aspects in parallel. The authors of the monography concentrate on the chosen business aspects of Asia’s expansion, such as: trade and value chain development, Asian transnational corporations, international mergers and acquisitions, growth potential of energy industry, GDP growth model. The unique nature of the studies conducted for this book stems from their wide thematic and geographical scope. Consequently, both business and financial features of economic growth are analysed. This approach is further used to study the financial aspects of China’s development in a related book prepared by the authors from the same Department: China’s economic growth: selected financial aspects. According to the opinion expressed by the reviewer the following monograph constitutes a valuable contribution to the discussion concerning the new role of Asian economies in the world. It is recommended to scientists, students and journalist who study the problems of Asia’s economic development and its role in the global economy. The results can be also useful to companies interested in developing their business activities in the countries of the region.

The monograph is focused on the issue of the global economy of the 21st century and an ongoing transformation of typical enterprises, based on the division of functions and hierarchical structures, into network organisations with hybrid, globally-dispersed connections. The author argues that the most powerful corporations (Top-TNCs), in their strive to maintain the position of sector-specific leaders and the associated long-term competitiveness, pursue the model of business integration and position themselves as orchestrators of global business networks (GBNs). This monograph aims to prove that global business networks are a new model of building international competitiveness based on the concepts of networking, orchestration, and coopetition. The assessment of GBN competitiveness requires a multi-dimensional approach, enabling the evaluation of the synergic influence of both economic and intellectual capital on the process of creation of added value.

The subject of the development and implementation of ICT is a source of many scientific considerations, whereas investing in modern ICT solutions is one of the main directions of organizational improvement. Therefore, the subject of management systems is still current and an important topic of publication. The editors would like to thank the authors for the following articles, thanks to which the magazine is thriving and developing. An extremely valuable feature of the Business Informatics series is the fact that the studies included in it present various opinions and points of view on the application of modern ICT solutions. The perspectives and views presented by the authors allow the readers to broaden their own reflections related to the created view on the possibilities and directions of the application of information and communication technologies in economic practice. It is also important that not all the articles sent for publication meet the formal and substantive requirements. This further increases the significance and value of the texts which have received double positive reviews and were then selected for publication in this issue of Business Informatics. Currently, as a result of a multistage and strict formal and substantive verification of our journal, approximately 25% of the texts submitted are accepted for publication. The editor of this issue would like to express his gratitude to all the authors who wanted to share their experiences and opinions. He would also like to thank the reviewers for their insightful and factual assessments of the submitted works.

Organizations can be supported at the operational level via transaction processing systems up to more intelligent systems delivering expertise or even generating decision proposals at the strategic level. This is especially important in globalization and free market economy where business companies compete and real advantages can be achieved as a result of properly used ICT. There are many problems and questions on the intersection of business and informatics solutions discussed by managers as well as by IT people. This volume consists of eight papers devoted to the selected aspects of Business Informatics. In the first paper the authors draw attention to the funds intended for projects cofinanced by the European Union and the Polish agency for Enterprise Development’s Activity 8.1. The authors described the use of funds during the period 2008-2010 and evaluated the innovation and quality of the chosen projects. The purpose of the second paper is to answer questions of management: whether e-sourcing as the process of sources and means of planning supply into all resources of the enterprise is a process of a strategic meaning for the enterprise. The third article presents some experience in the implementation of the large-scale systems and the current state-of-the art for the domain. The next one is devoted to a problem of temporal reasoning for managerial tasks. It shows the complexity of economic environment, which leads to representational problems. Next the features of a temporal reasoning systems are pointed out, and finally one of such systems is presented and critically discussed. The fifth article gives a reader the characteristics of a hidden message in e-commerce. These data transactions include sensitive document transfer, digital signature authentication and digital data storage. The use of digital steganography for information security in various e-commerce applications through the Internet are discussed in detail in this article. The sixth paper presents a prototype application – Spatial Visualization Tool (SVT). The first part of the paper introduces a reader to selected aspects of Geographic Information Systems methodology and briefly presents the algorithm of SVT. The second part explains the theoretical algorithm of acquiring data and performing a spatial visualization. The last section of the paper covers the practical example of SVT application to select candidates for a job. The prototype tool was constructed using Microsoft Excel with Visual Basics for Applications. The aim of the seventh article is to define the communication and knowledge management role in the customer–supplier relationship with particular emphasis on IT knowledge outsourcing. The last paper presents the results of a study conducted in Slovenia between January and June 2011 in Slovenian micro-enterprises. The authors used a structured questionnaire with some demographic questions about business computerization, the owner’s characteristics and some questions about the level of awareness of Cloud computing and answered the question what significance the listed properties of Cloud computing services for owners to hire Cloud solutions had.
