„Ex oriente lux” Congratulations to the authors of this first textbook focusing on the new, emerging field of telecardiology. This textbook is a very important step to spread more knowledge to clinical cardiologists – from the basics to practical issues of this new facet of digital cardiology. For me it is not a surprise that this important textbook was written and published in Poland first. Pioneer work in the field, e.g. the TELEREH-HF trial, was performed in a nationwide network of telemedical centers. Moreover, the Polish colleagues are working hard and with open mind. So, there is a constant exchange of new ideas even from abroad and the cooperation with international experts, which represents another success factor for the telecardiology in Poland. Finally, the translation of this textbook into English is a consistent next step taken to extend its audience for the benefit of our patients. Friedrich Köhler Berlin, Charite. 2020-05-06 Heart failure remains a significant challenge for health care systems worldwide. As the medical world strives to reduce the incidence of this disease and provide patients with more comprehensive care, the telemanagement of heart failure patients offers a promising solution. This book presents the role of different forms of e-Health – including e-education and self-monitoring, internet/mobile applications, structured telephone support, telemonitoring, telerehabilitation, remote monitoring of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices, and haemodynamic implantable electronic devices – in providing optimal longterm management of heart failure patients. Introducing telecardiology to everyday clinical practice requires educating both patients and medical teams (physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists). In this respect, it is a unique book devoted to the use of remote monitoring in the comprehensive care of heart failure patients. The role of telemedicine in the management of chronic diseases is supported by European, American, and international scienti c societies. I would like to congratulate the authors of this magnificent book, which will be extremely useful to fellow cardiologists as well as our cardiac patients. Cardiology Department Centre Hospitalier Montlucon, France Chair of the Tele-Cardiology WG International Society for Telemedicine & e-Health Board Member&Communication CNCH Past-Secretary of the ESC-ACVC

System ochrony dzieci – po prostu pomyśl inaczej? Analiza krytyczna wybranych modeli Niniejsza publikacja zawiera kompleksową analizę struktury i historycznego rozwoju czterech prawnych systemów wsparcia rodziny i ochrony dzieci: czeskiego, słowackiego, polskiego i brytyjskiego (Anglia i Walia). (Z recenzji dr hab. Agnieszki Golczyńskiej-Grondas, prof. Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego) ********* This publication provides a useful insight into the structure and historical development of four family support and child protection frameworks: Czech, Slovakian, Polish and British (England and Wales). It looks at how each of the models understands child welfare, especially in the context of child protection and discusses the parents’ position therein. The book could inspire practitioners, researchers and policy makers to redefine child-focused practice and build systems where child welfare is considered paramount and is safeguarded throughout – first and foremost, well- -coordinated and targeted support of their families and, if that is not possible, thoroughly assessed and supported permanent out-of-family placements. The publication is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Poland license (CC BY 3.0 PL) (full license available at: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/pl/legalcode). The Chapter describing child protection proceedings in the Family Courts in England and Wales is essential reading for those wanting to know more about the evolution of the law, public inquiries following cases where protection was found wanting, and current practice, particularly in regard to fostering and adoption. Much light is shed on the elements of assessing risk and permanence planning. It’s suitable for those needing an overview, but also those wishing to explore the subject in depth. I highly recommend it. (Judge Arvil Calder,Immediate Past President of International Association of Youthand Family Judges and Magistrates) With its broad scope, the reviewed publication is an important contribution to the monographs devoted to the subject. There are not many works that focus on the analysis of individual national systems in order to find a perfect model – an institutional solution that could be used to improve the protection of children’s rights in practice. (Excerpt from the review by Marta Danecka, PhD) As regards interdisciplinary reflection on social work understood as providing solutions to problems of children, youths and dysfunctional families, Child Protection System – just think differently? Critical analysis of selected models is, in my opinion, a publication that is unique on the Polish market. Its vast advantages include the theoretical and practical research-based approach as well as the legal perspectives applied by the authors. The book may find its place in international organisations (such as E (...)

Warto przypomnieć, że w 2012 r. obchodziliśmy Europejski Rok Aktywności Osób Starszych i Solidarności Międzypokoleniowej (Europen Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012), którego celem było stworzenie lepszych możliwości do aktywnego starzenia się poprzez promowanie działań w obszarze: zatrudnienie, uczestnictwo w społeczeństwie, niezależne życie.

“This book is not addressed to the learned, or to those who regard a practical problem merely as something to be talked about,” with this sentence English philosopher Bertrand Russell began The Conquest of Happiness and it has become an inspiration for me and a starting point for my analysis. Staying true to Russell's ideas, I have written a book which—I believe—can be addressed to all (scholars as well) who are interested in happiness and how it can be achieved. I have placed my considerations on happiness in the areas we all know: family, marriage, children and gender. When writing the book I surfed through Internet forums and analysed the results of scientific studies in order to scrutinise Russell's seven causes of unhappiness: competition (when investing in children), boredom (of doing housework), fatigue (of double shift), envy and comparisons of mothers, males’ sense of sin, persecution mania and new fathers’ fears of public opinion. Let's be honest: my findings are not always nice. Not infrequently, the results of scientists' work contradict what we believe. Read it only if you are ready to face new and unexpected.

This issue of Sociological Review commemorates the 25th anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of The Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. It should be recalled that the beginnings of children’s studies and the sociology of childhood coincided in time with the introduction of this treaty, which established international standards for children’s protection and development. The Convention aims at safeguarding the youngest society members from different forms of abuse, exploitation and violence, as well as at promoting their rights to a decent standard of living and to broad social participation. The authors of the articles presented herein, representing the current sociological attitude towards children and youth, follow these assumptions. The articles thus mirror some important attributes of contemporary children’s studies – its cognitive multidimensionality, differentiated quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the shift from “research on children” to “research with children”, scholars’ interest in the results of comparative studies (especially the results of natural sciences), and the concern about the practical implementation of research outcomes. The main topics tackled in this collection of texts are children’s poverty and social inequalities rooted in the first phase of their life cycle, suffering and various risks experienced by children and teenagers, framed in both the national and international contexts, as well as children’s quality of life, youngsters’ well-being, youth participation, civic engagement and the new concept of investing in children. Children, considered as equal social actors and citizens – although still most vulnerable to abuse, discrimination and social exclusion – are presented in the framework of their complicated networks of relationships with peers, adults, collectivities and societies, the welfare state, social policy institutions and other organizations, with the notion to important factors decisive for their present life and their future.
