Offering to the readers subsequent volume of Financial Sciences, I would like to draw attention to the fact that financial sciences, like many other fields of science, are widening their scope and becoming more and more interdisciplinary. This is also reflected in the contents of this volume. Although the main division into public finance, corporate finance and private finance is still valid, and therefore the papers appearing in this volume have been grouped accordingly, some of them also deal with management, international political economy, sociology and psychology aspects, which are important factors of financial decisions and activities. Among the papers on public finance, readers will find those dealing with various aspects of public finance management and tax level policy. I do hope that all of them, and especially the paper on tax burden, will initiate a discussion on the future forms of taxation policy in Poland. The part devoted to international finance provides a broad perspective on some not very commonly known issues. At present, the Islamic world attracts particular attention, and private investors’ decisions in EU countries contribute an important factor to the functioning of international financial markets. The last two parts dedicated to corporate and private finance include some papers in which the mentioned interdisciplinary aspects are clearly pointed out, giving new insight into the subject.

The contents of this subsequent edition of Financial Sciences can be divided into three parts which contain articles dealing with public finance, corporate finance and financial intermediaries. It should be noted, however, that in each of these parts one common problem appears that attracts the authors’ attention. So, in the papers dealing with public finance, the authors focus on tax and quasi-tax burdens, in the part devoted to financial intermediaries – on the functioning of financial market, while in the articles on corporate finance – on acquiring and managing the company’s capital assets. In one article an interesting approach to behavioural aspects of financial decisions undertaken by economic entities is also worth mentioning. The whole volume reflects therefore the main points of interest of today’s financial sciences. '

The business environment is not quiet any more, in almost every field some threats appear. This can also be seen in the contents of this issue of Financial Sciences. In each of the five articles presented here, the problem of risk management is touched upon, either explicitly or implicitly, like in the paper by Marszk, where the complexity of innovative financial products is also perceived as a risk factor. The dividend smoothing described by Gostkowska-Drzewicka and Majerowska is in turn a kind of tool to minimise risk. So the accent is nowadays on keeping stability rather than on looking for new opportunities. This is clearly reflected in the topics that have drawn the attention of our authors. Though not very optimistic, I do hope that their work published in this issue will be of interest to our readers. Ewa Bogacka-Kisiel

This textbook contains materials for several courses which are taught in the Master’s Programme in Financial Engineering that is run at the Poznań University of Economics and Business. The book consists of seven chapters that cover the main areas of quantitative finance: investment, financial instruments pricing, financial risk measuring and management as well as corporate finance. The main part of the book is devoted to the mathematical models used in the field of finance. There are four chapters devoted to the pricing of financial instruments: from pricing equities using Capital Asset Pricing Model, through derivative instruments on equites, to more complicated derivatives on interest rates. The last topic is illustrated with some genuine examples from the markets in the post-crisis period. One chapter describes basic models and concepts used in measuring financial risk. Two other chapters are about investment. One describes the way in which companies finance their activities. The second one describes investment strategies of hedge funds. All chapters contain exercises and examples from the real markets. In order to understand the topics from the textbook, some prerequisites are required. It is assumed that a potential reader knows the basics of probability theory, linear algebra and calculus. The knowledge of econometrics and statistical methods used in economics will also be useful in better comprehension of the book. All these issues are usually taught in Bachelor’s programmes in Economics or Finance.

The concept of this monograph is focused on an analysis of the prospects for improving the competitive position of Asian countries in the global economy. The authors argue that a comprehensive analysis of Asia’s economic development requires studying its business and financial aspects in parallel. The authors of the monography concentrate on the chosen business aspects of Asia’s expansion, such as: trade and value chain development, Asian transnational corporations, international mergers and acquisitions, growth potential of energy industry, GDP growth model. The unique nature of the studies conducted for this book stems from their wide thematic and geographical scope. Consequently, both business and financial features of economic growth are analysed. This approach is further used to study the financial aspects of China’s development in a related book prepared by the authors from the same Department: China’s economic growth: selected financial aspects. According to the opinion expressed by the reviewer the following monograph constitutes a valuable contribution to the discussion concerning the new role of Asian economies in the world. It is recommended to scientists, students and journalist who study the problems of Asia’s economic development and its role in the global economy. The results can be also useful to companies interested in developing their business activities in the countries of the region.

The Department of Finance and Accounting at Wrocław University of Economics and the Department of Finance at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń decided to organize cyclical scientific conferences entitled “Finance and accounting for sustainable development.” The first conference, which initiated the entire cycle, was held in Karpacz in 2013, the second in Toruń in 2014, whereas the third one – so far the latest – took place again in Karpacz this year. The primary goals, followed during the current year edition of the conference, were focused on determining the impact of phenomena and financial relations on the integration of social, economic and environmental order, as well as the financial system influence on the degradation of ecosystems, destabilization, social and economic crises. The total of 80 scientific articles, in Polish and English, were sent for the conference, which gathered almost 150 participants – representing 26 universities established in 15 locations in Poland and Ukraine. These studies were subject to the qualification procedure and after receiving positive reviews they were included in one of the three research volumes entitled “Research Papers of Wrocław University of Economics”: 1. Finance and accounting for sustainable development – responsibility, ethics, financial stability – Volume I – Finance, edited by Professor Grażyna Borys and Robert Kurek PhD, 2. Finance and accounting for sustainable development – responsibility, ethics, financial stability – Volume II – Accounting, edited by Professor Jacek Adamek, Associate Professor at Wrocław University of Economics and Joanna Zuchewicz PhD, 3. Finance and accounting for sustainable development – responsibility, ethics, financial stability – Volume III, edited by Professor Teresa Orzeszko, Associate Professor at Wrocław University of Economics and Jarosław Dziuba PhD. The present volume – the last of the three above-mentioned publications – offers 14 articles in English, covering various aspects of finance and accounting functioning in the context of sustainable development. Due to the extensive and diverse thematic range of the presented studies, instead of their grouping they are published in the alphabetical order by their authors’ names. We would like to express our appreciation to the authors for putting in their efforts and preparing interesting texts. We are also very grateful to the reviewers for their hard work in providing valuable comments and useful suggestions, which certainly contributed to the improvement of the reviewed papers quality. We do be-lieve that the undertaken cooperation will not remain an incidental one, but shall result in lasting scientific contacts, meetings and interesting discussions in years to come, during the next editions of our conference, so please feel invited and welcome already today. We remain hopeful that this issue of the research volume will meet its readers’ expectations, match their interests and will be kindly received by them. We would like to wish an interesting and inspiring time while reading it. Jarosław Dziuba, Teresa Orzeszko

The book contains a series of eight long case studies on various business issues in emerging markets (for instance Polish, Chinese, Nigerian). The authors focus on a variety of topics from marketing, through business operations, finance, leadership, innovation, business development, internationalization and decisions to human resources management. Also, the perspective of the analyzed issues is varied, in the initial case studies, the microeconomic approach dominates, then the mezoeconomic and macroeconomic approach. The team of authors included both academics, with extensive teaching experience in English-speaking studies, and business practitioners whose practical knowledge allows them to explore contemporary business challenges in emerging markets. We are putting this book in the hands of lecturers and students of economics, finance, and management, believing that it will be a source of inspiration, discussion and will allow to better explore contemporary business. At the same time, we hope that by offering this book, we are filling a gap in the publication market, which has been dominated by case studies dedicated to well-known companies, well-known brands, and mature markets.
