The concept of performance measurement and management is nowadays very important and widely discussed not only in academic literature, but also in practice. In order for organizations to gain and sustain competitive advantage it is essential to measure, monitor on a constant basis, evaluate and finally manage performance in various areas of economic activity. Due to the fact that the term “performance” is very wide and ambiguous, there are a lot of instruments and techniques of performance measurement and management oriented toward the achievement of companies’ goals. In the Research Papers there are shown chosen problems of performance measurement and management, important for both theoretical considerations and practical applications. The major objective of this study is to discuss various concepts and applications of contemporary performance measurement and management. Major groups of problems discussed in the study include in particular: 1) management accounting and its tools such as life cycle costing, activity-based costing and budgeting, 2) performance assessment in the context of value creation, 3) internal audit and management control, 4) performance measurement and management in agriculture, 5) intangible aspects of performance measurement. The papers in the book were prepared for the Sixteenth Scientific Conference “Accounting and Controllership”. The conference was organized by the Department of Cost and Management Accounting at the Wrocław University of Economics on October 10-12, 2011.

The presented papers form an important starting point for academic discussions and show us the diverse spectrum of in¬teresting issues perceived from the perspective of organizational behaviours and organizational culture, enriched with examples of the interpretational possibilities offered by the psychoanalytic understanding of social phenomena. What merits special attention is the fact that half of the articles contri-buted to the collection present a systemic-psychodynamic approach, still relatively little known in Polish management. This approach is based on psychoanalytic theories and the concepts developed therein. The exceptional nature of this collection consists in showing the diversity of perspectives regarding both the understanding and the empirical examination of the phenomena and proces¬ses which we observe in organizations. It contains six articles that describe from the cognitive-behavioural perspective phenomena as complex as whistleblowing (I. Świątek-Barylska, M. Opara: Perception of whistleblowing by professionals-to-be. Results of the research) and organizational creativity and ambi-dexterity in Polish enterprises (K. Bratnicka: Creativity and performance. Testing ambidextrous hypotheses in Polish SME’s context). These two articles are based on extensive empirical studies and can form a very good groundwork for further rese-arch, and they have a great practical importance for managers, too. The two subsequent papers present the issue of organizational culture described from the behavioural standpoint (J. van Cle¬eff, and P. van Nispen: Organisations, Projects and Culture) and from the systemic-psychodynamic perspective (L.F. Stapley: Exploring the Meaning of Work in the Context of Organizational Culture). Although it might seem that everything has already been said about organizational culture, it is worthwhile to consider the thought expressed by L.F. Stapley that we focus on the identification of symptoms of culture rather than understanding what it really is. Then, the last two papers reveal the world of organizations through reference to strictly psychoanalytic constructs, such as death drive, mourning and melancholia (S. Kahn: Eros &Thana¬tos: A Psychoanalytic Examination of Death in the Context of Working Life) and the concepts of organization-in-the-mind, narcissism, unconscious, introjective identification (X. Eloqu¬in: The Tyrant-in-the-mind: Influences on Worker behaviour in a Post-totalitarian Organisation). These papers, based on psychoanalytic theories, reflect upon and illuminate some of the new contours and shapes, perhaps previously not fully seen or appreciated from others perspectives. It is my hope that this collection of six papers will form a framework for noticing, exploring, and reflecting upon the forces and processes that exist beneath the surface of our interac¬tions with other people and our changing world. I believe that the submitted publications constitute interesting reading on modern management from the perspective of psychoanalytic and “classic” approaches to management. I hope they will become the source of many inspiring discussions and academic polemics. Adela Barabasz

Professor Alina Kwiatkowska’s untimely departure prevented her from seeing this publication project through to the end. This book is dedicated to her memory and it is only suitable to have the volume summarised in Professor Kwiatkowska’s own words, coming from a draft of the former editor’s introductory chapter: “The present collection of papers was inspired by the international conference on lntersemiotic Translation held at the University of Łódź in 2013. Organized by the Institute of English Studies, it brought together many enthusiastic participants, who gathered to discuss the issues that many traditional scholars would consider to be niche and rather exotic. The volume includes a selection of papers from that conference, complemented by same additional contributions.” Mikołaj Deckert Monika Kocot Aleksandra Majdzińska-Koczorowicz

The current issue of “Financial Sciences. Nauki o Finansach” contains four empirical papers. A. Alihodžić tested in his paper the bank profitability indicators in Bosnia and Herzegovina. P. Jagliński used the event study to research investors’ reaction to quarterly earnings announcements. J. Machnik analysed the investment performance of absolute return funds in Poland, studying the performance persistence and the occurrence of gamma convergence. Last but not least, we present a paper by G.P. Sanusi and L.O. Oderinde who studied remittances and import spending in Nigeria to determine the possible effects of the COVID-19 pandemic using the VAR model. We hope that all the articles will interest the readers and become an inspiration for further research.

PERFORMATIVE ASPECTS OF ART The concept of performativity has been usually evoked in the discussions on the philosophy of language and the reflection on theatre and performance art. However, in recent years there have been some attempts to broaden its scope. The theoretically inclined researchers have been working out the main assumptions of the aesthetics of performativity. These are claimed to include the challenging of the boundaries of artistic disciplines, and emphasizing the active role of the recipients, for whom the art works become events developing in consequence of their actions. Besides those attempts to grasp the theoretical consequences of “the performative turn”, one should also note some very interesting practical analyses, employing the theory in the discussion on concrete works from different domain of art. It appears that one can discover transformational potential, focus on change rather than just existence, even in the domains traditionally regarded as “artifactual” (painting, sculpture, installations). The planned volume of “Art Inquiry” will be devoted to the reflection on both directions of expansion of the concept of performativity. We would like the authors to consider its general significance for aesthetics and for the theory of various domains of art. We also hope that they will show the changes occurring when its unique perspective is adopted in the discussion on both theatre, paratheatrical experiments, and film, and the domains which have traditionally emphasized the role of the artistic artifact. The title of this volume invites questions about the possible scope of performativity and its kinds.

THE HOMELESSNESS OF ART References to „being settled” somewhere and being „homeless” have reappeared in various disciplines of the humanities for a long time. Those concepts were used in different contexts and in different senses. In 20th century philosophy, much attention was paid to the Heideggerian concept of man as “the neighbour of Being”, i.e. his dwelling “in the nearness of Being”. This image led to attempts at discovering what is unique to the human condition. Lukacs offered a critique of „transcendental homelessness”, which he saw as characteristic of contemporary culture. Other philosophers pointed out that the fast-changing reality and the engagement in utopian projects characteristic for the condition of the modern man, are conducive to our loss of the sense of settlement. The second half of the 20th century introduced the discourse of unsettlement, non-belonging. Adorno negated the possibility of feeling at home in the world after Auschwitz. Other authors offered the concept of “the uncanny” (das Unheimliche), or being faced with strange and incomprehensible forces in one’s own home, only illusorily familiar. It has been also pointed out that the sense of settlement and the associated feeling of safety may turn out to be limiting. Freedom must mean the loss of the sense of safety, familiarity, commitment. Encountering what is different, marginal, often suffering or victimized (e.g. in feminist or postcolonial discourses) also sensitizes us to the importance of opening ourselves to new experience, which leads to the de-stabilization of our own monolithic home. The subject area outlined here may be variously related to art. On the one hand, art may be considered as an important voice in the discussion on our sense of belonging or uprootedness, on the other the question of whether it should be rooted in tradition, or leave this “home” to gain new experiences is also pertinent. The volume of Art Inquiry to which we seek your contributions will be devoted to this set of issues. Your prospective papers should concern some theoretical aspects of the concepts mentioned above in relation to art, artistic activity, reception of art works, or offer a case study of some artistic endeavour in which those concepts have taken a concrete shape.

Pole zainteresowań naukowych pisma stanowią teoretyczne i historyczne zagadnienia sztuk plastycznych, multimediów, filmu, dramatu i muzyki. Kolejne tomy mają charakter zbiorowych prac monograficznych. Dążymy do uwzględniania prac młodych badaczy.
