Professor Alina Kwiatkowska’s untimely departure prevented her from seeing this publication project through to the end. This book is dedicated to her memory and it is only suitable to have the volume summarised in Professor Kwiatkowska’s own words, coming from a draft of the former editor’s introductory chapter: “The present collection of papers was inspired by the international conference on lntersemiotic Translation held at the University of Łódź in 2013. Organized by the Institute of English Studies, it brought together many enthusiastic participants, who gathered to discuss the issues that many traditional scholars would consider to be niche and rather exotic. The volume includes a selection of papers from that conference, complemented by same additional contributions.”

Redaktorzy serii Marek Zirk-Sadowski, Tomasz Bekrycht We are presenting to Readers the work which is a result of co-operation between Polish and Ukrainian specialists in jurisprudence. The texts which are presented in this monography are an example of pursuing a postulate of external and internal integration of jurisprudence. In our opinion, the theses presented in it have a chance of becoming an important voice in discussions on various forms of law violation and use of loopholes in law (law avoidance, abuse of law, tax avoidance etc.). Undoubtedly, the theses also constitute an interesting view from the perspective of an analysis of the legal transformation process in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (especially Poland and Ukraine).

In this volume of the journal “Economics of the 21st Century” we present six scientific papers, which take under consideration macroeconomic problems observed in the global economy. In the first three articles researchers concentrate on economic matters analysed from the perspective of the European Union. In a paper devoted to the competitiveness of Central and Eastern Europe M. Myszkowska studies the ten economies forming this region, trying to determine – through the prism of an adequate set of competitiveness’ factors – what decides about productivity and prosperity in these countries. In his article G. Shkabarin conducts an analysis of foreign direct investments’ spillovers in transitive economies on the example of the Baltic countries. He examines the effects for the productivity at various levels and attempts to determine the existence, sign and magnitude of different types of spillovers. In turn, A. Skórska searches for an answer to the question what the scale, dynamism and disparities of employment and underemployment in the European Union are. She also speculates what the chances are to achieve employment objectives in the context of strategy “Europe 2020”. The focus of J. Kundera is the economic crisis in Greece. The author attempts to identify its causes and deliberates what changes Greece must implement in its economic policy and what institutional reforms should be carried out in the European Union to overcome the present crisis and prevent their occurrence in the future. The presented volume is concluded with two scientific texts, the authors of which analyse chosen macroeconomic issues on the example of Poland. The article of A. Ablov examines the firm-level and regional determinants of inward foreign direct investments into Polish enterprises in the framework of sectoral analysis. He aims to find out which of these determinants influence investments attraction more and how their effects vary depending on the segment of the economy. In turn, A. Kuźmińska--Haberla and M. Haberla investigate the most vital challenges of medical tourism. Their article presents major determinants of development of such a phenomenon in Poland, the most important benefits offered by rapid growth of this field of economy and concerns about medical tourists. The papers included in this very publication bring new insights into selected macroeconomic problems in the modern global economy. We hope that a Reader interested in these subjects will find here the incentives for further research and scientific inquiry. Bogusława Drelich-Skulska, Wawrzyniec Michalczyk

The monograph is scientifically valuable, innovative and brings the high potential for application. The discussed topics are up to date and significant for both theory and economic practice. The literature review presented herein is of high academic quality, as is the rich empirical part which covers the stages of development of loan and guarantee funds, provides a comparison of their functioning in different countries and analyses their financial standing in the context of regional development. The monograph may be addressed to representatives of the economic practice as well as academics, in particular those specialising in public finance, local government finance, accounting and management of corporate finance. All in all, it is a valuable publication, not only on the Polish publishing market.

Główne wątki analiz prezentowane w tomie odnoszą się do przemian, jakim podlegają struktury współczesnych społeczeństw w pierwszej dekadzie XXI wieku, poddane oddziaływaniu procesów globalizacyjnych i transformacyjnych. Większość artykułów zamieszczonych w tomie charakteryzuje klasyczne podejście do analiz struktury społecznej oparte na próbach dobranych metodą losową. Analizy te dokumentują, iż współczesne społeczeństwa nadal mają strukturę warstwową, a teorie klasowe wciąż pozwalają nam wyjaśnić sposób, w jaki nierówności związane z produkcją i rynkiem, dostępem do edukacji i zasobów organizacyjnych, utrwalają stare i nowe nierówności w czasie.
